 The Mellon Top Box

Below are 10 Mellon Top Cabinets.  Each will be loaded with a JBL E120 speaker for mids and a JBL 2446 driver and a JBL 2382 Bi-radial Horn for highs.  The cabinet has a low cutoff of 180HZ and works very well when crossed over at 2000HZ between the mid and high.  The JBL E120 is attached to a 1/4 wave horn based on " ex " with a 1/4x1/4 wave mouth making this a very efficient and sweet sounding midrange horn.  To remove heat from the E120 a innovative sealed rear chamber is used that allows air to flow over the magnet using a simple convection chimney.  To reduce distortion of the higher mid frequencies the pressure from behind the dust cover is also vented out the rear of the cabinet. Basically the mid component of the cabinet has three separate chambers.

  1. Horn in front.

  2. Sealed chamber in back.

  3. Rear vent for the dust cover.

Furthermore each cabinet has a 10 degree taper so that they can be easily displayed.        With a footprint of 19.5" wide by 24" deep and height of only 31.25"  and a rated sustained output of over 140db the Mellon Top Box is quite a speaker cabinet.

   Tornado Bass Cabinet

Flat to 40HZ is our quest and it has been realized with the new and innovative Mellon/Summy Tornado Bass Cabinet.  Constructed of the finest 13 ply 3/4 inch Russian Birch the Tornado Bass Cabinet is definitely state of the art.  Lets start with two JBL 2226 600 watt speakers mounted  inside a tightly built octagon.  The exit throat is attached to a seven foot bi-radial hyperbolic bass horn employing the latest techniques in bass horn technology.

Using four cabinets, at 30 feet I measured 122db.  Two of the Tornado  Bass Boxes were compared to two heavy duty dual 18" cabinets.  At 40Hz the Tornado Bass Box was 6db louder.  WOW......That's bass that will physically hurt you if you get too close.  Plus, because the cabinet constantly expands and has no traps or bottlenecks to color the sound, the Tornado Bass Box is  a very high fidelity speaker cabinet.  To reduce cabinet vibration all cavities are filled with fiberglass.  You won't find a better built cabinet anywhere.  The cabinet is 3.5' wide, 3.5' deep and 22.5" high.  They are designed to be used in groups of four creating a smooth natural bass that will bring tears to your eyes.  I have had hardened professionals hug me after hearing the tight sound originating from this cabinet.  It is truly amazing.
